In its quirky box like design, many people were not optimistic about the GameCube when it was first announced. In order to be better competitive with the big hitter Sony  Playstation, Nintendo opted to scrub away with the iconic cartridge and go with a optical mini-dvd. This new media format held tons more data and would bring a new era of Nintendo gaming. Many of Nintendo's original franschies were brought back with a completely new engine to work with and in a some cases started a few new popular gaming trends. To This day the GameCube is one of the best loved consoles ever made.
